1st row | Neighbours Connect, a Non-Governmental Organsation (NGO), on Friday donated educational materials worth GH?10,000 to pupils of Asofan MA4 Basic School in the Ga North Municipality of the Greater Accra Region. The items, which included school uniforms, bags, footwear, socks, exercise books, notebooks, pens and pencils, formed part of the NGO’s annual project dubbed ‘Neighbours Connect Care for the Less Privileged (NCCLP)’. The Founder of the NGO, Ms Josphine Asmah, said the donation was to cause a change in society and impact the lives of the pupil, especially the less privileged. |
---|---|
2nd row | The Board Chairman of Genser Power Africa, Otwasuom Osae Nyampong, has, on behalf of the 1995-year group of Adisadel College in Cape Coast, completed and handed over a science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) block to the school. To ensure the facility does not lose its shine, Nana Nyampong has instituted an investment fund, which would rake in about GH?90,000 cedis every year to maintain the facility. Nana Nyampong, who is also a member of the 1995 year group, said he was contacted by some members of his year group to support the completion of the facility, which was then at the ground floor. To that end, he said contractors were changed and the facility was finally completed early last year |
3rd row | The Cape Coast Teaching Hospital (CCTH) has secured $300,000 for the establishment of an endo-laparoscopic unit. A memorandum of understanding (MOU) to that effect was signed between the management of the hospital and the Korea Foundation for International Health (KOFIH) in Cape Coast last Tuesday. |
4th row | The World Health Organisation’s (WHO) Country Representative to Ghana, Professor Francis Chisaka Kasolo, has stressed the need for capacities and resources to be put in place at the community level for early detection and containment of health emergencies. Stressing the point that most health emergencies began and ended in communities, he pointed out that there had been many stories of how the lack of involvement of communities in health in general, and emergencies cases, had led to significant loss of lives. "Lessons from the COVID-19 pandemic have also amplified the critical role of community members in prevention, preparedness, readiness and response to any type of emergency, regardless of the hazard," he said. Prof. Kasolo said this in Accra last Tuesday at a three-day tabletop exercise on community readiness for public health emergencies organised by the WHO in collaboration with the United Kingdom (UK) Health Security Agency, the Ministry of Health and the Ghana Health Service (GHS). |
5th row | SEND Ghana, an advocacy group has urged the Ministry of Education and partners to reevaluate educational priorities for a balanced and comprehensive approach across all levels of the education system. It said the overconcentration of efforts on senior high education at the expense of basic education was a worry which needed to be looked at and must be guided by the principle of “leaving no one behind”. This was contained in a statement issued by SEND Ghana on January 24, 2024, to commemorate the 6th International Day for Education. Held on the theme: “Learning for lasting peace”, the celebration urges stakeholders to pause and reflect on things and events that disrupt education for many school-going children around the world. |

1st row | “Last year, we visited those less privileged at Circle, providing them with essential care such as haircuts and medical attention. We distributed clothes and food, touching the lives of those in need. This year, we chose Asofan MA4 Basic School because we noticed many learners wearing torn uniforms, worn-out school slippers and some even going bare footed. This eventually affects their academics because a child in that situation might not feel happy to go to school so our goal as a group is to boost their confidence by addressing these basic needs,” she added. |

2nd row | The facility, which has six yet-to-be furnished laboratories, will provide students access to modern technology for effective teaching and learning of STEM programmes. Nana Nyampong believed STEM had a critical role in the future and the training of well-equipped students required that they had access to the right learning facilities. |
3rd row | The project, which is to be undertaken at a cost of $311,000, is part of the hospital's 25th anniversary legacy projects. It is to position the CCTH as one of the few centres across the country that delivers endo-laparoscopic services as well as provide machinery and equipment for the hospital to undertake surgical procedures. The Community Chest Korea (CCK) is funding the project through KOFIH which is expected to improve the hospital's capabilities on post graduate training and enhance learning experience. |
4th row | The community readiness tabletop exercise focuses on strengthening operational readiness of communities to detect, notify and respond to public health threats. It also provides a unique opportunity to identify strengths, gaps and priorities for community readiness, and to begin the process to address areas of improvement. Three communities from two districts of the Eastern Region have been targeted for the exercise. |
5th row | SEND Ghana said despite commendable strides in advancing education in Ghana, it was important to acknowledge and confront the challenges impacting access to and quality of education for children in the country. By recognising these challenges, it said, Ghana can work towards implementing targeted interventions that address the specific needs, contributing to a more inclusive and effective education system in Ghana. The advocacy group said basic education forms the crucial groundwork for a student's academic journey, providing essential skills and knowledge that lay the foundation for advanced learning and that the unbalanced focus risks undermining the importance of nurturing a strong educational base. |

1st row | “Many a time people think it is the orphanages who only needed help but there are other people out there who are less privileged and also needed help. So this is our focus as a group, by extending help to all to also give them hope that they’re not forgotten,” she stated. The Headteacher of the school, Mr Christian Ahiaba, on behalf of the school management, thanked the NGO for the support and said it would go a long way to improve the academic performances of the children. |
---|---|
2nd row | He emphasised that all stakeholders must be more than interested in the education of the young. He admonished the management and staff to ensure the facility was kept in good state. He advised the students to work hard to take advantage of opportunities in their environment to achieve their aspirations. |
3rd row | Undertaking laparoscopic surgeries require special skills obtained through extensive training. The support would thus cover the setting up of the surgical theatre and a training centre, the provision of surgical equipment and staff capacity building. |
4th row | Ghana is the first country globally to conduct this exercise, and the choice, according to Prof. Kasolo, was because Ghana prided itself in trying out new things. He said after the exercise with the three communities, the information gathered would be used to build a programme that would incorporate communities across the country. |
5th row | SEND Ghana urged the government to prioritise and invest in improving the learning environment for students adding that currently, the budget allocation for the education sector in Ghana falls below recommended standards, with only GH?32.7 billion allocated from the projected government expenditure of GH?226 billion, representing 14.5 per cent. The allocation it described as lower than the 2023 sub-Saharan African average of 15.5 per cent and falls below the UNESCO member-states commitment to allocate a minimum of 20 per cent to education. It therefore called on the government to make available resources such as learning materials to enhance the learning experience for children saying the low budget allocation poses significant challenges in addressing the diverse needs of the education sector, hindering initiatives aimed at enhancing educational quality and accessibility for all. |

| Neighbours Connect supports Asofan school | Neighbours Connect, a Non-Governmental Organsation (NGO), on Friday donated educational materials worth GH?10,000 to pupils of Asofan MA4 Basic School in the Ga North Municipality of the Greater Accra Region. | “Last year, we visited those less privileged at Circle, providing them with essential care such as haircuts and medical attention. | “Many a time people think it is the orphanages who only needed help but there are other people out there who are less privileged and also needed help. | Ghanaian Times | https://www.ghanaiantimes.com.gh/neighbours-connect-supports-asofan-school/ | 2024-01-26 |
| Santa 1995 hands over Otwasuom stem project to ADISCO | The Board Chairman of Genser Power Africa, Otwasuom Osae Nyampong, has, on behalf of the 1995-year group of Adisadel College in Cape Coast, completed and handed over a science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) block to the school. To that end, he said contractors were changed and the facility was finally completed early last year | The facility, which has six yet-to-be furnished laboratories, will provide students access to modern technology for effective teaching and learning of STEM programmes. Nana Nyampong believed STEM had a critical role in the future and the training of well-equipped students required that they had access to the right learning facilities. | He emphasised that all stakeholders must be more than interested in the education of the young. | Empower communities to respond to health emergencies ? WHO | The World Health Organisation’s (WHO) Country Representative to Ghana, Professor Francis Chisaka Kasolo, has stressed the need for capacities and resources to be put in place at the community level for early detection and containment of health emergencies. | The community readiness tabletop exercise focuses on strengthening operational readiness of communities to detect, notify and respond to public health threats. It also provides a unique opportunity to identify strengths, gaps and priorities for community readiness, and to begin the process to address areas of improvement. Three communities from two districts of the Eastern Region have been targeted for the exercise. | Ghana is the first country globally to conduct this exercise, and the choice, according to Prof. Kasolo, was because Ghana prided itself in trying out new things. He said after the exercise with the three communities, the information gathered would be used to build a programme that would incorporate communities across the country. | Daily Graphic | https://www.graphic.com.gh/news/general-news/ghana-news-empower-communities-to-respond-to-health-emergencies-who.html#:~:text=Empower%20communities%20to%20respond%20to%20health%20emergencies%20%E2%80%94%20WHO,-Augustina%20Tawiah%20%26%20Rhoda&text=Unfortunately%2C%20many%20lives%20were%20lost,the%20hazard%2C%22%20he%20said. | 2024-01-25 |
| SEND Ghana urges govt to intensify support for quality education for all Ghanaian children | SEND Ghana, an advocacy group has urged the Ministry of Education and partners to reevaluate educational priorities for a balanced and comprehensive approach across all levels of the education system. | SEND Ghana said despite commendable strides in advancing education in Ghana, it was important to acknowledge and confront the challenges impacting access to and quality of education for children in the country. | SEND Ghana urged the government to prioritise and invest in improving the learning environment for students adding that currently, the budget allocation for the education sector in Ghana falls below recommended standards, with only GH?32.7 billion allocated from the projected government expenditure of GH?226 billion, representing 14.5 per cent. | Daily Graphic | https://www.graphic.com.gh/news/general-news/send-ghana-urges-govt-to-intensify-support-for-quality-education-for-all-ghanaian-children.html | 2024-01-26 |

It is being done by the Ghana Health Service (GHS) in collaboration with the World Health Organisation (WHO) through a group of experts in cervical cancer control. The Director-General of GHS, Dr Patrick Kuma-Aboagye, who revealed this at the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) and Cervical Cancer Symposium in Accra on Friday, said the strategy would help the country to achieve the global elimination targets while streamlining the multiple disjointed efforts to address cervical cancer. | Dr Kuma-Aboagye said globally, a total of 604,000 new cases of cervical cancer were recorded, with 342,000 deaths in 2020, making the disease the fourth most common cancer in women. However, he said 90 percent of the deaths were attributed to low-and middle-income countries which Ghana was no exception. He explained that cervical cancer was the second commonest female cancer in Ghana, affecting an estimated 3,151 women, with 66 per cent rate of fatality. | Dr Kuma-Aboagye noted the Global Strategy for the Elimination of Cervical Cancer provides that by 2030, 90 percent of girls should fully be vaccinated with the HPV vaccine by age 15, 70 percent of women screened with a high-performance test by 35 and 45 years of age and 90 per cent of those identified with cervical disease given appropriate treatment. The Chief Executive Officer of National Vaccine Institute, Prof. William Ampofo, said it was important to sensitise the public and health care providers to cervical cancer and the importance of HPV. He urged individuals to use the HPV vaccines to protect themselves against the disease which would help control and prevent cervical cancer in the country. | Ghanaian Times | https://www.ghanaiantimes.com.gh/ghana-plots-cervical-cancer-elimination-by-2030/ | 2024-01-23 |

| GTEC approves 1,000 academic programmes for universities | The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) approved about 1,000 university academic programmes in the third quarter of 2023, in line with efforts to ensure the institutions run only accredited programmes. It has also set February 1, 2024, to lift the ban on the accreditation of some academic programmes that were withheld last year due to established discrepancies in getting those programmes certified. The Director-General (D-G) of GTEC, Prof. Ahmed Abdulai Jinapor, announced this at a meeting with heads of technical universities in Kumasi in the Ashanti Region last Monday. | He said the commission was able to clear many of the backlog of accreditation applications through the introduction of a digital platform known as the Accelerated Accreditation Approach which sought to speed up accreditation processes for programmes of universities. The D-G said that the platform was to ensure that GTEC cleared the backlog of accreditation issues so that all programmes would be in good standing within the shortest possible time. | Prof. Jinapor further said that GTEC had begun a serial publication of unaccredited programmes and centres in newspapers and on the commission’s website. He, therefore, cautioned the public against accepting offers from institutions to study unaccredited programmes. The D-G said that his outfit would also submit a list of unaccredited programmes and centres to government agencies for them not to employ people with certificates of unaccredited courses. Prof. Jinapor said the measures formed part of efforts by the regulatory body to sanitise the accreditation environment in universities in the country. | Daily Graphic | https://www.graphic.com.gh/news/general-news/ghana-news-gtec-approves-1-000-academic-programmes-for-universities.html#:~:text=The%20Ghana%20Tertiary%20Education%20Commission,institutions%20run%20only%20accredited%20programmes. | 2024-01-24 |
